Velvet Vigor

Velvet is back with a vengeance. The Fall 2012 runways proved the fabric is no longer reserved for regal costumes and '80s theme parties. Instead, it's making its triumphant return in the form of backless curve-hugging silhouettes, saucy cocktail dresses, and even statement suits.

As always, Hollywood is on top of the trend (heck, Angelina Jolie has been hitting up velvet for days! Remember this perplexing glove dress?). Get the scoop on the revamped look and how the stars work the touchable textile.
Let's start with the queen of curves, shall we? Kim Kardashian has the Midas touch when it comes to style and this crackled Rachel Roy gown turned heads at her watch collection launch. Odds are this velvet style won over more fans than her time pieces.

Tadashi Shoji kicked off New York Fashion Week with languid gowns made from the luxe fabric. This  backless Scarlett number still resonates -- and is calling Cate Blanchett's name.

Velvewas traditionally associated with royalty, so it's only fitting that the world's favorite duchess would wear it. Kate Middleton donned this black strapless Alexander McQueen number for the Sun Military Awards late last year. A statement necklace didn't hurt, but her best accessories were walking right beside her.
General rule: If it strolls down a Gucci runway, it's hot. This green burnout dress popped on the plum catwalk. Lea Michele or Karen Elson need to get their hands on this baby, pronto!

Jessica Alba showed off her impossibly perfect post-baby body in this velvet clad Armani Privé dress. This combination of an Eastern motif with a modern cut is a refreshing take on the trend.

Badgley Mischka, famous for opulent evening wear, also offered their version of the ubiquitous style. This midnight teal corset dress sauntered over a reflective blue runway, creating fashion show magic.

Nicole+Richie in Nicole Richie At Il Sole in LA
Nicole Richie revealed how to rock the trend on a night out in LA. Her eclectic styling paired this navy mini with a matching textured Art Nouveau green shoulder bag.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2012, Ralph Lauren

Both Ralph Lauren and Rachel Zoe tested out some velvet suits on the runway this season. While Zoe's designs had a heavy '70s vibe, this RL ensemble channeled British sophistication with a button-down vest and pocket scarf.
